Speaker of the House and Leyte 1st district Rep. Martin Romualdez is optimistic about the bilateral ties between the Philippines and the United States of America (US) under the current Marcos administration.

Separate delegations of Filipino and American lawmakers convened at a “US-Philippines Congressional Delegation Friendship Caucus” on Thursday night, Aug. 18, at the Manila Golf and Country Club in Makati City.
In his address before the lawmakers, Romualdez spoke about the strong, historical ties between the two nations and expressed optimism on their continued relationship under the fledgling administration of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
“Our people split their blood here in the hills of Bataan and that soil fertilized that relationship, that blood of US and American soldiers. These are the ties and binds that go deep and very well rooted in our conscience. I’d like to say thank you again, and welcome to the Philippines and we wish you come and visit us more often, thank you,” Romualdez said before the lawmakers on Aug. 18.
“The relationship is getting stronger despite all the crises that we faced in the international arena. I know this relationship will endure and help us here stay the course, moving forward peace, prosperity and progress, not just in the Philippines, but in the region and of course with our partner, the United States,” he continued.
The House Speaker also thanked the delegation of US legislators for their country’s immediate support to the Leyte province when Typhoon "Haiyan"–known to Filipinos as "Yolanda"–made landfall November 2013.
Romualdez has represented Leyte’s 1st district from 2007 to 2016, and then from 2019 until now.
“Indeed your presence here means a lot to us. It is an opportunity for us to further deepen and strengthen our ties of friendship and manifest our deep appreciation for the strong support and for all the assistance during our crises after Typhoon Haiyan in my district,” the Leyte solon said.
The US congressional delegation consisted of Senator Edward John Marke; California representatives Alan Lowenthal and John Garamendi; Virginia Rep. Donald Strnoff Beyer, Jr.; and American Samoa Rep. Aumua Amata Radewagen.
Meanwhile, the Filipino lawmakers present were Romualdez; Senate President Pro Tempore Loren Legarda; Senator Francis Tolentino; House Majority Leader Mannix Dalipe; Marikina City 2nd district Rep. Stella Quimbo; Surigao Del Norte 2nd district Rep. Robert Ace Barbers; Aklan 2nd district Rep. Teoderico Haresco; Bohol 1st district Rep. Edgar Chatto.
Meanwhile, Marcos also met with the delegation on Aug. 18.
