“This new substation will address the outdated and dangerously outmoded equipment and replace them with new, modern, and the latest technology in substation design and operation,” said MORE Power President and CEO Roel Castro during the recent groundbreaking ceremony.

A project with contractor Hansei Corp., the new substation will house a 33-megavolt ampere (MVA) power transformer.

The existing substation is one of the oldest existing substations that used to be operated by MORE Power’s predecessor, Panay Electric Co. (PECO). Some of its equipment date back to 1964.

Castro said that dilapidated equipment cannot cope with the rapid economic development of this city, the regional capital of Western Visayas.

“This is a significant milestone for the construction of the City Proper substation. This project will eventually provide a reliable and sustainable power supply and will complement the economic growth and development of the City of Iloilo,” added Hansei President and CEO Rudy Nuyda.

Aside from housing the new power transformer, the new substation will become MORE Power’s control center for its distribution system. It will be equipped with state-of-the-art hardware and software to run the operations.

The control center will be to improve response time and decision-making when there are power interruptions all over this city.
