The Marikina City Council recognized the Marikeño trainers of the Philippine Wheelchair Basketball National Team that won two silver medals in the 11th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Paralympic Games in Surakarta, Indonesia.
The resolution authored by Councilor Carl Africa acknowledged the diligence and sacrifices made particularly by the trainers of sports team.
It emphasizes their integral role in the development of athletes that leads to the success of teams in their chosen fields.
Lead trainer Vernon Perea, and the team's co-trainers Harry Joseph Solano and Yolanda Hernandez were welcomed and presented with the resolution at the city council meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 17.
The wheelchair basketball national team won the silver medals for the men's 3x3 and 5x5 categories.
According to Africa, the triumphs and contributions of Filipino athletes, coaches, and trainers must always be honored as they compete at the international level.
The 11th ASEAN Para Games were held from July 30 to Aug. 6, 2022.
Around 80 para-athletes competed in archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, chess, judo, powerlifting, swimming, and table tennis.
The national teams won a total of 104 medals, consisting of 28 gold, 30 silver, and 46 bronze.
The country ranked fifth out of the 11 participating nations.
Last July 2022, the local government also honored the Marikeño athletes who won medals in the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi, Vietnam.
