Man who shot cop in Mindoro surrenders

CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro – A man wanted for shooting a police intelligence officer in Sitio Tiwi, Barangay Matungao in Socorro town surrendered to authorities on Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 17, after two days of hiding.

Col. Samuel Delorino, newly-designated acting provincial director of Oriental Mindoro Police Provincial Office, said the alleged gunman, Leonel D. Bumacod, a resident of Bansud town, surrendered at about 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday.

Bumacod was fetched up by elements of Regional Intelligence Unit of Philippine National Police-MIMAROPA (Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan) in his safehouse in Pinamalayan town, and brought to Socorro Municipal Police Station.

On Monday, Aug. 15, Staff Sgt. Artemio Honorica and his team were conducting intelligence activity in Barangay Matungao when at about 3:30 p.m. they spotted the suspect on board a tricycle driven by Ariel Loria, 46, a hog raiser and a resident of Sitio Tiwi in the said barangay.

While they were tailing the tricycle, the suspect suddenly drew his firearm and shot the policemen, hitting Honorica in his buttock and thigh.

Bumacod managed to flee the crime site while his companion was immediately arrested by the police.

The two are presently under the custody of Socorro MPS and a case of frustrated murder is being prepared against them.
