4,363 aftershocks recorded after destructive northwestern Luzon quake, says Phivolcs

State seismologists continue to detect aftershocks nearly a month after the destructive July 27 magnitude 7.0 northwestern Luzon quake.

In an advisory issued as of 4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 18, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) disclosed that they have already recorded a total of 4,363 aftershocks following the seismic event.

Of this number, 1,146 quakes were plotted while 68 were felt. Plotted earthquakes, according to Phivolcs, were located by three or more stations. Recorded quakes, on the other hand, were detected by at least one station.

The powerful earthquake occurred on July 27, 2022 around 8:43 a.m. Its epicenter was traced three kilometers (km) northwest of Tayum, Abra, but it was greatly felt in most parts of Luzon including Metro Manila.
