Fnatic secures final TI11 invite as Valve settles confusion

It was a roller coaster ride for Fnatic after it was initially thought to be missing out on the direct invitation to The International 11.

Valve released an announcement and clarified that the SEA team qualified for the crowning tournament of Dota 2.

The confusion stemmed from the computation of the DPC points as third party website Liquipedia had Fnatic missing out the TI11 after finishing outside the top 12 in the DPC rankings, falling short by 0.05 points against Outsiders which initially claimed the 12th spot with 1020.05 DPC points.

However, as per Valve official rankings at the end of the Arlington Major, it was Fnatic that had 1020 points and finished at the 12th spot while Outsider came in 13th with only 1019 points. It all boiled down on how the computation was being done with Valve rounding down the penalties each time it received point deduction for the roster changes.

“We are aware of a discrepancy regarding how the DPC standings are calculated when compared to unofficial sources. The DPC website reflects the official standings for the 2021-2022 season,” Valve said in a statement.

Liquipedia meanwhile apologized for the confusion brought by the standings on their Dota 2 Wiki, saying a different interpretation on Valve’s rule led to the difference in the standings.

“Valve are the ones in charge of the competition and it is on them how to follow their own rules, however we believe there's space for improvement on clarity. For the upcoming DPC events we will make sure to improve on clarity on our side as well,” Liquipedia said in its own statement.

With this development, Fnatic became the second team to qualify to TI11 from the SEA region. It marked the ninth straight TI appearance for the esports organization. Filipino players Djardel “DJ” Mampusti, Marc “Raven” Fausto, Armel “Armel” Tabios and Jaunuel “Jaunuel” Arcilla will be making their return trips to TI along with Anucha "Jabz" Jirawong.
