PH has lesser regions with active cases of ASF, bird flu — BAI

The number of regions in the country with active cases of African Swine Fever (ASF) and Avian Influenza (AI) or bird flu went down, the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) disclosed on Tuesday, Aug. 16.

“We have reduction in the number of ASF cases.efore we have 14 affected regions, as of August 4, we now have five regions affected by the ASF,” said BAI Assistant Director Jonathan V. Sabiniano in a press briefing in Quezon City.

He said the five regions with active cases of ASF are the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Region 3, Region 8, Region 9, and Region 12.

Meanwhile, Sabiniano said the number of regions with AI also decreased to only two regions from nine regions.

He said the two regions with active cases of bird flu are CAR and Region III, as of August 4.

Sabiniano said the BAI has been working double time to guard borders so that ASF and AI will not enter the country, saying they have been conducting thorough disinfection.

ASF is a highly contagious and deadly viral disease affecting domestic and feral swine of all ages, according to the US Department of Agriculture.

On the other hand, AI or bird flu is a respiratory disease of birds caused by influenza A viruses.
