The San Juan City local government conducted on Monday, Aug. 15, a misting and clean-up drive as part of the city's intensified campaign against dengue.
San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora led the program together with other city government officials in Barangay Corazon de Jesus.
Zamora said San Juan only had 83 dengue cases since January this year and zero active cases as of Aug. 12. Data from the Department of Health (DOH) showed that San Juan has the lowest number of dengue cases in Metro Manila.
There were also no dengue-related deaths in the city since January of last year.
“San Juan City has regularly conducted cleanups and misting. We have done this several times this year and we will continue to do it throughout the year so that we keep our numbers low and prevent deaths,” the mayor said.
In June this year, during the Dengue Awareness Month, Mayor Zamora, along with barangay officials, committed to conduct regular cleanups and misting operations to protect San Juan citizens from dengue.
The DOH had earlier said that dengue cases in the Philippines reached more than 90,000 from January until July this year.
A total of 92,343 dengue cases was recorded from Jan. 1 to July 23.
“Cumulatively, cases this year are 118 percent higher compared to the 42,294 cases reported during the same period in 2021,” the DOH said.
Three regions were identified by the agency as having the most number of dengue cases. These are Central Luzon, with 5,186; National Capital Region (NCR), with 2,374; and Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon), with 2,178.
It also noted that nine out of 17 regions exceeded the epidemic threshold, with Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan) and NCR showing a sustained increasing trend.
