Metro Manila's Covid-19 positivity rate down to 16.4%, says OCTA fellow

OCTA Research fellow Dr. Guido David said that the Covid-19 positivity rate in Metro Manila has decreased to 16.4 percent, which could be an indication that the current wave of infections has already peaked.

In an update on Twitter on Sunday, Aug. 14, David noted that the central region’s weekly positivity rate has decreased from 17.5 percent on Aug. 6, to 1.6.4 percent on Aug. 12.

“This is the first time in the current wave the weekly positivity rate decreased, and it gives us optimism that cases in the NCR (National Capital Region) may have already peaked,” David said.

In a Laging Handa public briefing on Aug. 8, the OCTA fellow said that the current Covid-19 wave in the Philippines had started in June.

“Naka-two months na tayo so dapat nasa peak na tayo (We’ve been in this current Covid-19 wave for two months now, so we should be already at the peak),” David pointed out during the briefing.

Positivity rate refers to the number of individuals who yielded positive results from among those who were tested for Covid-19.

The World Health Organization has recommended that the Covid-19 positivity rate should remain at 5 percent or lower, which would show that the spread of the virus has been contained.
