P8.6M worth of smuggled cigarettes seized in Zamboanga City operations

Agents of the Bureau of Customs (BOC) seized some P8.6 million worth of cigarettes in a series of series of anti-smuggling activities since July 25.

Seized were 276 master cases and 327 reams of smuggled cigarettes in five separate joint operations in in Zamboanga City from July 25 to Aug. 11.

The BOC, with the help from the local police and the military conducted two apprehensions during seaborne patrols and three at customs checkpoints.

Agents from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency also inspected the smuggled goods for the possible presence of illegal drugs.

The BOC also took custody of the vessels, vehicles, and master cases of cigarettes while charges of violation of Republic Act 10863 or the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA) of 2016 and the Tobacco Exportation and Importation Rules and Regulations are being prepared against those responsible in the attempted smuggling.
