No 'concrete details' yet on possible teaching of ASEAN languages in schools: DepEd

The Department of Education (DepEd) clarified that there are no “concrete details” yet on the possible teaching of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) languages in Philippine schools.

“Right now, we don’t have concrete details on that,” said DepEd Spokesman Michael Poa in a presser early this week.

Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte, in her speech during the celebration of the 55th Founding Anniversary of the ASEAN held at the DepEd Central Office in Pasig City on Aug. 8, pushed for the offering of ASEAN languages in schools and universities in the region.

“ASEAN languages may be offered in our schools and universities,” Duterte said to help strengthen the relationship of ASEAN member-countries.

“While the Philippines has been sending English-language teachers to our Southeast Asian neighbors for years, I believe it is high time we encourage our youth to learn each other’s national languages,” she added.

Pressed for additional details, Poa said that the VP-Secretary just put the idea of offering ASEAN languages in schools out there.

“It was an idea that has to be accepted also by our ASEAN partners,” Poa said. “It is an idea she volunteered and put out there for other leaders of ASEAN to consider,” he added.
