Monkeypox preventing resumption of international flights at Iloilo Airport

ILOILO CITY – The monkeypox outbreak is hindering the planned resumption of international flights at the Iloilo Airport.

“We have to wait. The monkeypox is a new development,” said Iloilo Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr.

The threat of monkeypox has prompted Defensor to seek new protocols for inbound passengers before allowing their resumption.

Defensor said that the Iloilo provincial government has to consult with national government agencies such as the Department of Health (DOH), Department of Tourism (DOT), or Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).

Last June, he expressed that there is a big possibility that international flights will resume, after the Duterte administration no longer required COVID-19 swab tests for inbound foreigners and returning Filipinos as long as they have received COVID-19 booster shots.

The Marcos administration is also firm in not implementing strict travel protocols.

Defensor was also earlier keen in allowing resumption of international flights when a major airline company was advocating for their resumption.

Iloilo Airport had been catering international flights to and from Hong Kong and Singapore before the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 as a pandemic in March 2020.
