Oil spill from damaged tanker causes traffic gridlock in Legarda, Manila

Motorists and commuters endured heavy traffic on Friday morning, Aug. 12, after the oil pump of a fuel tanker was damaged as it ran over a steel plate cover on Legarda Street, Sampaloc, Manila.

According to the report of the Barbosa Police Station (PS-14), a tractor truck with a fuel tanker, driven by Edgardo Romero, 54, drove over a steel plate-covered manhole along the southbound lane of Legarda Street corner Gastambide Street in Sampaloc, Manila at around 9:30 a.m.

When the truck's wheel passed over the steel plate, it lifted and hit the oil pump underneath the tanker, the police said.

The damaged tube spilled diesel on the road.

Personnel from the Manila Police District (MPD), Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO), and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) immediately responded.

Heavy traffic was observed on the roads from Legarda Street leading to Recto and Mendiola.

Following the truck's removal from the street, the BFP and DRRMO conducted cleaning operations to rid the road of the spilled oil.

There were no reported injuries in the incident.
