Magnitude 4.8 earthquake hits Abra — Phivolcs

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has recorded a 4.8-magnitude earthquake in Abra province on Friday afternoon, Aug. 12.

It was initially measured as a magnitude 4.5 quake but Phivolcs later revised it to magnitude 4.8.

Phivolcs said the quake struck 1 kilometer (km) northeast of Bucay, Abra at 5:04 p.m., with a depth of 17 km.

It was felt as a “moderately strong” tremor at Intensity IV in the municipalities of Bucay, San Isidro, San Quintin, and Bangued in the province of Abra.

Phivolcs’ instruments also recorded the earthquake at Intensity III in Vigan City and Intensity I in Sinait, Ilocos Sur.

It said the tremor was an aftershock of the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that struck Tayum, Abra on July 27.

As of Friday afternoon, Phivolcs had recorded 3,759 aftershocks, with magnitudes ranging from 1.4 to 5.1, since the July 27 northwestern Luzon earthquake.

Of the recorded earthquakes, 1,060 have been plotted by three or more stations.

Phivolcs said 65 of these tremors were felt.
