Southwest monsoon continues to weaken – PAGASA

The southwest monsoon, locally called habagat, has further weakened, but it is still expected to bring scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over parts of Luzon in the next 24 hours, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Thursday, Aug. 11.

“Patuloy ang paghina ng habagat at tanging dito na lang sa western section ng Luzon ito nakakaapekto at nagdadala pa rin ng pag-ulan sa ilang bahagi ng Luzon. Mostly cloudy skies naman for the rest of mainland Luzon, habang meron tayong namataan na mga weather disturbances na malayo naman sa ating bansa (The southwest monsoon continues to weaken and it is only affecting the western section of Luzon. It is still bringing rains to some parts of Luzon. Mainland Luzon will mostly experience cloudy skies, while we have also observed weather disturbances which are both far from our country),” said PAGASA weather specialist Benison Estareja in a public weather forecast.

These two weather disturbances were both spotted outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR). One was a low pressure area (LPA) spotted in the northeastern section of PAR, while the other one was a tropical storm located in southern China.

Meanwhile, due to the effects of the southwest monsoon, residents of Bataan, Zambales, and Kalayaan Islands were warned against possible flash floods or landslides due to moderate to at times heavy rains.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country, on the other hand, may expect partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers due to the southwest monsoon and localized thunderstorms.
