Marcos appoints George Garcia as Comelec chairman

President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. has tapped former Commission on Elections (Comelec) Commissioner George Erwin Garcia as the poll body's new chairman.

Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles announced Garcia's designation on Monday, Aug. 1.

"The President has appointed Mr. George Erwin Garcia as Chairman of the Commission on Elections. He has submitted Mr. Garcia’s name to the Commission on Appointments as required by law," Angeles said.

With this, Garcia is set to return to the Comelec after his appointment was bypassed by the Commission on Appointments in June 2022.

He will replace Comelec Chairman Saidamen Pangarungan, who was also bypassed by the Commission on Appointments in June.
