Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Enrique Manalo has tested positive for Covid-19, and thus will not be able to attend his first ever ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) as the department's chief in Cambodia this week.

Manalo made the announcement in a Twitter post on Monday, Aug. 1, and said he was confirmed positive for the virus "early this weekend."
"This would have been my first ASEAN engagement in my capacity as Secretary for Foreign Affairs, so it is unfortunate that my absence happens at this important time," he said, adding that he will not be able to attend meetings related to the 55th AMM.
But Manalo assured Filipinos that the country's participation in the event "will not be affected, as it will be ably represented by DFA Undersecretary for Bilateral Relations and ASEAN Affairs, Hon. Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro."
The DFA chief said he already sent a letter of regret to Cambodia Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, who is also the chair of this year's event, Prak Sokhonn.
"I will concentrate on recovery so I can go back to working at DFA as soon as possible, and I look forward to the next opportunity to meet with ASEAN colleagues and our Dialogue Partners," he added.
Apart from the AMM, Manalo has also been scheduled to meet US State Secretary Antony Blinken, who will fly to the Philippines on Aug. 6.
