
Jose Rizal University boosted its Final Four aspirations with a 25-19, 25-16, 25-19 sweep of San Beda Friday in NCAA women’s volleyball at the Paco Arena in Manila.
The Lady Bombers banked on their combination plays and quick attacks to hike their win-loss tally at 4-4 and tie with the Mapua Lady Cardinals at fourth place.
They have one game remaining against the Lyceum Lady Pirates on Tuesday with high hopes of catching the semifinal bus.
Renesa Melgar lifted JRU with 15 points built on 12 kills, two blocks and one ace, while Dolly Versoza chipped in 10 points including a booming spike that sealed their victory.
The Lady Bombers took advantage of the Lady Red Spikers’ erratic plays by bombarding them with 41 kills apart from posting four blocks and draining four aces.
JRU also gained 26 points off San Beda’s unforced errors.
San Beda actually had a chance to snatch the momentum in the third set after taking an early 8-4 lead, but JRU launched an 8-1 assault to grab the 12-9 upperhand.
Aira Domingo briefly breathed life to stop the bleeding at 21-18 for San Beda, but Versoza’s back-to-back combination plays reset the pace for JRU.
San Beda’s loss – their sixth in eight matches – ended its Final Four bid, joining eliminated teams University of Perpetual Help, Emilio Aguinaldo College and Letran at the bottom standings.
Only Trisha Paras scored in double figures for the Lady Red Spikers with 10 points.
