DPWH vows to speed up Albay-Sorsogon connector road

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has committed to expedite the construction of a new connector road for Albay and Sorsogon.

DPWH Sec. Manuel Bonoan said the 15.87 kilometer road will be a new access that would address traffic problems of motorists and commuters in the two provinces.

Legazpi City and nearby areas in Albay are the usual destination of workers and students from Sorsogon. On the other hand, Sorsogon is being developed as another tourist destination in Bicol region.

Bonoan said the new road, the Bacon-Manito Road or the Albay-Sorsogon Connector Road, would directly link Legazpi City – Punta de Jesus Road in Albay and Junction Sorsogon – Bacon – Manito Road in Sorsogon.

Once completed, DPWH-Bicol Regional Director Virgilio C. Eduarte said the Connector Road will reduce the travel time of motorists by one hour.

"This would would benefit as many as 5,000 motorists daily, and eventually improving the economic condition of areas along its route," said Eduarte.

“Locals and visitors will be able to utilize this all-weather road very soon. We are targeting completion of ongoing sections before the end of this year,” he added.

The project has so far received an allocation of ₱2.21 billion.

The DPWH has requested an additional ₱500 million budget for the remaining civil works covering the installation of active and passive slope protection system, metal beam guardrails and continuation of the concretion of the unpaved areas.
