7 BFP trainees in Eastern Visayas land in hospital for acute kidney injury
TACLOBAN CITY – The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)-Region 8 (Eastern Visayas) said Wednesday, July 6, that seven trainees have been taken to the hospital for acute kidney injury.
Fire Chief Supt. Rodolfo Denaga, BFP-Region 8 director, disclosed that aside from muscle pain, they initially noticed urine discoloration among four trainees during their laboratory examination Monday, July 4.
"As a preventive measure, we constantly check their urine to monitor their complaints during the third day of training," he said. They started training Friday, July 1.
This prompted Fire Chief Insp. Jean Tolosa, chief of the BFP-Region 8 Health and Services Section, to recommend a hospital checkup and eventually admission for the trainees that day.
The next day, Tuesday, July 5, three more trainees suffered the same symptoms and brought to the hospital for admission.
She said they suffered acute kidney injury from rhabdomyolysis caused by sudden extraneous physical exercises which no one among them has prepared for.
Tolosa explained that muscles release enzymes and proteins which may cause damage to the kidneys because they are too big to be excreted.
She said that the trainees have not undergone initiation rites since there were no traces of hematoma.
Five trainees have been discharged from the hospital.
