Tulfo assures sufficient stockpile of relief goods for calamity victims

Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Erwin T. Tulfo visited on Wednesday, July 6, the National Resource Operations Center (NROC) in Pasay City to ensure its readiness in producing family food packs for families affected by typhoons, flooding, and other disasters.

“Chineck natin ang kahandaan nila (NROC). Alam niyo naman na typhoon season na ngayon. Baka biglang bumaha especially sa NCR (National Capital Region). Chineck natin, mukhang okay naman. May sapat tayong relief packs, hygiene kits, at iyong mga sasakyang pang delivery, nakahanda namang lahat (We checked the readiness of the NROC. You know, it’s typhoon season now. It may suddenly flood, especially in NCR. We have checked, and it looks okay. We have enough relief packs, hygiene kits, and delivery vehicles are all ready),” Tulfo said.

The NROC serves as the main disaster hub of the DSWD.

It is open daily, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and can produce an average of 20,000 food packs a day.

Tulfo recommended the principle of “first in, first out system” in relief distribution to avoid expiration of goods.

“Ibaba lahat ng mga food packs sa mga regions para naka-preposition na. Pinalabas na ang (ibang) mga relief (goods), nakalabas na ang ibang mga trucks for delivery (Lower all food packs into regions for prepositioning. Trucks are now out to deliver other reliefs goods),” Tulfo said, adding that this is in line with the goal of the Marcos administration to have a proactive and not a reactive government.

The prepositioning of food packs at the local government unit (LGU) level was discontinued during the time of President Duterte due to alleged illegal distribution of relief goods by erring politicians.

Moreover, Tulfo assured the public that the DSWD has enough funds for disaster operations and implementation of programs, such as the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program and Sustainable Livelihood Program.
