Pasigueño nursing students join healthcare force

More than 100 nursing students of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Pasig (PLP) were recognized and welcomed into the nursing profession through a Capping, Pinning, and Candle-lighting ceremony held on Tuesday, July 6.

The capping, pinning, and candle-lighting ceremony served as an initiation for nursing students of batches 2023 and 2024, indicating their readiness to begin practicing the knowledge they've learned and skills they gained from school in a hospital or clinic set-up.

Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto and Rep. Roman Romulo congratulated the students for their diligence amid the restrictions to their education during the Covid-19 pandemic.

"Na-delay sila dahil walang face-to-face pero hindi sila sumuko (They were delayed because there were no face-to-face classes, but they did not give up)," Sotto said in a social media post.

The mayor reiterated the local government's full support for the city's nursing students, citing the free tuition offered by PLP through the Unified Student Financial Assistance System for Tertiary Students (UniFast) of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

He also mentioned the connectivity allowance worth P500 per month that was given by the local government to PLP students starting in November 2021.

The local government also sponsored the costs of the nursing students' Related Learning Experience (RLE) which covers their combined classroom and field studies, wherein the expenses were, as Sotto described, "akin to payment of a full tuition fee."

To aid the students in virtual learning, the local government also helped in the procurement of learning devices for PLP students.

In his speech at the event, Sotto said that he considers the funds the local government allocates for public education as an "investment for future Pasigueños, and their families."

"Ang lahat ng mga ini-invest natin na ito ay walang kapalit, walang utang na loob. Ang hinihiling lang natin na kapalit nito, kung mayroon man, ay pagdating ng panahon, na kayo po ay mga nurses at nagtatrabaho, huwag natin kalimutan ang ating mga komunidad (We do not ask for anything in return, and students do not owe us anything for these investments. We only ask that when you become nurses or start working in the future, don't forget your communities)," Sotto said.

"Let's never forget to serve with competence, with integrity, with the best of our abilities," he added.
