Boxer drowns while crossing river in Negros Occidental town

BACOLOD CITY – A 26-year-old boxer drowned while crossing the Tabla River between the boundaries of Barangays Balicotoc and Magballo, Ilog, Negros Occidental Monday, July 4.

The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) identified the victim as Robert “Toto” Landero of Barangay Canlamay, Ilog.

According to rescuers, Landero attempted to cross the river Monday afternoon in Barangay Balicotoc amid the heavy rains.

Landero tried to swim to go home but he drowned because of the strong river current.

A search and rescue operation was launched by the barangay and his family until his body was retrieved around 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 6, or two days later.

Landero started his boxing career in 2013 and was widely known in the local boxing scene.

Before he went missing, Landero was able to fight in Cebu City last month but lost to Christian Araneta. Landero had a record of 11 wins, eight losses, two knockouts, and two draws.
