Bato renews push for death penalty for high-level drug trafficking

Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa has renewed his push for the imposition of the death penalty on convicted high-level drug traffickers in the 19th Congress.

The death penalty bill is among the first 20 bills that dela Rosa filed early this week at the Senate.

Last June, Dela Rosa, who was at the forefront of the Duterte administration’s campaign against illegal drugs, had vowed to refile the death penalty bill.

Dela Rosa’s Senate Bill No. 207 in the 18th Congress sought the death penalty for those who would be convicted of importing, manufacturing, and cultivating dangerous drugs, marijuana, opium poppy and other narcotics worth P500,000 to P10-million.

The senator, likewise, filed the bill proposing the reinstatement of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC).

Other bills dela Rosa filed include the proposed End Local Communist Armed Conflict (ELCAC) Act, amendments to the Party-list System Act, Drug Abuse Prevention, Treatment, and Rehabilitation, the creation of the Anti-Drug Abuse Council, the Philippine National Police (PNP) Revitalization and Capability Enhancement Act, repeal of the Continuing Professional Development Act of 2016, Filipino Farmers Financial Assistance Program Act, and the Special Defense Economic Zone Act of 2022.

Dela Rosa also filed the Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) Card Registration Act, the proposed CCTV Act of 2022 and the Disaster Resilience Act of 2022 among others.
