4 NPA rebels killed in Negros encounters

BACOLOD CITY – Four New People’s Army (NPA) rebels were killed while their comrade was captured in two separate encounters in Negros Occidental Wednesday, July 6.

Brig. Gen. Inocencio Pasaporte, commander of the Army 303rd Infantry Brigade (IBde), said the first encounter happened around 9:30 a.m. in Barangay Santol, Binalbagan where four rebels were killed.

The clash occurred after troops of the 94th Infantry Battalion (IB), Police Provincial Mobile Force Company, and 33rd Division Reconnaissance Company (33rd DRC) responded to the reported presence of unidentified armed men who were allegedly extorting money in the area, according to Pasaporte.

Pasaporte said that long firearms and a .45 caliber pistol were recovered from the slain rebels who have yet to be identified. No injuries were reported on the government side.

He said these rebels were believed to be part of armed men who ambushed Binalbagan policemen in Barangay Bi-ao early this year.

Two policemen were wounded in the ambush in February which was later claimed by the NPA.

Three hours later, another clash between government troops and communist guerillas occurred in Barangay Marcelo, Calatrava.

Pasaporte said that troops of the 79th IB encountered at least seven alleged remnants of the dismantled Northern Negros Front (DNNF) around 12:30 p.m.

He said these armed men were trying to recover or establish their mass base in Calatrava.

Pasaporte said that troops were able to arrest one NPA rebel and recovered a short firearm and rifle grenade. The Army has yet to identify the arrested rebel.

Last month, the 79th IB overran an alleged hideout of the NPA believed to be remnants of the DNNF in Barangay Minapasuk, Calatrava.
