Jinggoy Estrada: Calls for charter change premature, self-serving

Returning Senator Jinggoy Estrada said he is opposed to any moves calling to amend the Constitution and pave way for a two five-year terms for the President.

Estrada made his position known after Pampanga Rep. Aurelio “Dong” Gonzeles Jr. filed a resolution reviving the measure that calls for a longer term for the President and Vice President at the House of Representatives.

“At this juncture, I oppose any and all moves to amend the term limits provision of the Constitution,” Estrada said in a statement.

“While I have yet to read Cong. Gonzales’ proposed measure, I am sure that many will agree with me that not only is it premature, it is likely to be misconstrued as self-serving,” the senator stressed.

Gonzales, in proposing an extended tenure for the President and VP, said that the present single term of six years “appears to be insufficient” for the implementation of long-term programs and policies.

In filing Resolution of Both Houses No. 1, the House lawmaker said the start of the new Marcos administration is a good opportunity for the people to revisit the 1987 Constitution.

But Gonzales explained that even if the measure is passed under the present administration, Marcos Jr. will not benefit from it.

He said the provision on term limits and re-election will only take effect starting in 2025.
