PCG, DOST sign pact to solve maritime challenges thru science

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Monday, July 4, to address the growing and evolving challenges in the maritime sector using innovative and scientific solutions.

Admiral Artemio Abu, PCG Commandant, and DOST-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD) Executive Director Enrico Paringit signed the MOU in a ceremony held at the PCG National Headquarters in Port Area, Manila.

Under the MOU, the PCG and DOST-PCIERRD shall collaborate towards pursuing a sustainable and science-based initiatives in solving a wide array of maritime security issues.

To do this, they agreed to share knowledge and technologies, implement joint research and development programs, formulate relevant policies, conduct feasibility studies, organize training programs, and share their facilities.

A six-member committee composed of three representatives each from PCG and DOST-PCIERRD will also be created.

The committee will be tasked to craft the framework which will be used as the basis for scientific and technical cooperation of the two agencies, as well as research and development (R&D) initiatives, technology transfer, and development of local technologies to fortify the country’s maritime defense and security capabilities.

Abu thanked the DOST for working with the PCG as he said the agency is gearing towards implementing innovations to enhance its maritime security, maritime safety, and disaster response capabilities.

"The results of this collaboration will surely enhance the performance of the PCG in its role in national development, especially in efforts to secure our territory from man-made and natural threats. This partnership further enhances the PCGs modernization program and promotes Philippine pride by developing and building homegrown technology, centered around the specific needs of the country," he said.

Meanwhile, Paringit said he looks forward to the realization of the two agencies’ goals, emphasizing that the partnership will also promote a safer maritime transport for the benefit of the Filipinos, and ensure clearer seas.

The ceremony was witnessed by Rear Adm. Allan Victor dela Vega, commander of Coast Guard Weapons, Communications, Electronics, and Information System Command (CGWCEISC); and Engr. Nonilo Pena, of PCIEERD Energy and Utilities Systems Technology Development Division (ETDD).
