Mayor Baste in his first day as Davao City mayor: 'I'm still observing'

DAVAO CITY – Mayor Sebastian Duterte said he would keep the existing policies previously implemented by his sister, former mayor and now Vice President Sara, although he added he is ‘still observing’ in his new job as the local chief executive.

“I don’t see any need to make adjustments for now. As you can see, this is my first day in office,” Duterte told reporters in his first press conference as mayor held after Monday’s flag raising ceremony in front of the City Hall.

“So, I will just observe for now. Let’s just maintain the protocols that are already in place in the city,” added Duterte.

Four days after he assumed his new position, the 34-year-old local chief executive, the youngest son of former President Duterte with ex-wife Elizabeth Zimmerman, had asked for time, saying that he needs to “observe how people react to ordinances.”

Duterte served as vice mayor from 2019 to 2022 with his sister, Sara, as mayor.

“It’s my first day. What can I say? I come from the same political background as the previous mayor. I really know the administration and its unit heads. I’ve worked with them before,” he said.

But Duterte reiterated his father’s stand on simplifying transactions with the city government, emphasizing the need to provide ease to its clients.

He said government workers must ensure to give a ‘good experience’ to those who seek the services of the local government.
