Man saved after tense jump off Pasig River bridge

A man was rescued by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) after he allegedly jumped off the Mabini Bridge and into the Pasig River in Manila on Sunday, July 3.

A report reaching the PCG Headquarters in Port Area, Manila identified the man as 29-year-old Jessie Ang, who lives in Brgy. 814, Mindoro St., Paco, Manila.

According to the report, Ang was initially seen sitting on the edge of Mabini Bridge by Reskie Aguilar, the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) chairman of Brgy. 830, while wearing only a shorts and slippers.

Sensing that something was off about the sighting, Aguilar requested assistance from the barangay officials as they contacted the PCG Station Malacanang for support.

“The responding PCG personnel tried to talk to him but he suddenly jumped off the Mabini Bridge,” the report said in Filipino.

It was not immediately clear why Ang risked his life by jumping from the bridge.

Rescue personnel who were on standby near the Mabini Bridge immediately deployed a life vest and life buoy to Ang so he could swim back to the PCG aluminum boat while being assisted by the PCG team.

Several bystanders witnessed the suspenseful rescue operation by the PCG and captured photos and videos of it.

Ang was then brought to the PCG Sub-Station Hospicio de San Jose where he was assessed by medical personnel. He was also given first aid, clothes, food, and water while being profiled.

After the initial assessment, he was turned over to barangay officials for the provision of additional assistance.
