Chinese envoy cites 'enhanced political mutual trust, friendship' between PH, China

Amid disputes between China and the Philippines over the West Philippine Sea, the close relationship between the two governments remains strong, even under the new administration.

Chinese Ambassador Huang Xilian said in a statement on Monday that Chinese Vice President Wang Qishan delivery of President Xi Jinping's congratulatory letter to his Filipino counterpart, newly-inaugurated President Marcos, only signified "enhanced political mutual trust, profound friendship and continued cooperation between" China and the Philippines.

Wang's attendance to the inauguration on June 30 was also a proof of the good relationship between the two countries, Huang said.

Meanwhile, State Councilor Wang Yi's upcoming official visit to the country "could be the first Foreign Minister received by the new Philippine government since taking office," the Chinese envoy said.

It would only fully reflect "how China attaches importance to countries' bilateral relations," he added.

"During the visit, State Councilor Wang Yi will pay courtesy calls on the new leadership and hold talks with new DFA (Department of Foreign Affairs) Secretary Manalo, delving extensively into Philippine-China relations, practical cooperation, and regional and international issues," Huang said.

The diplomat expressed that the Chinese visits would "kick-start China-Philippines relations in the new era."

"May our ties deepen, especially on the many relevant issues such as Belt and Road Cooperation, the China-ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Comprehensive Strategic partnership, the Global Development and Security Initiatives, and even our people-to-people exchanges in many fields," he added.
