The daughter of former Lamitan City Mayor Rosita “Rose” Furigay has recalled her last day with her mother who was shot and killed in the Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU) shooting incident on July 24.
“I did not even have more than one minute to process that my mom was shot dead in the head and died in the arms of my dad, in front of my twin sister, Hannah, on her law school graduation day- the day that was suppose to be one of the happiest days of our lives,” Kelsey Furigay said in an open letter posted on Instagram on Saturday.
“Everyday, I think that I’m just in a really bad nightmare, but I wake up, take a deep breath, and close my eyes. 'This is my reality.' Everyday I scream, I cry. My family is in so much pain. That Sunday, when I saw my mother’s dead body, I could not even stand. Hannah, my twin sister, HELD our dying mother in her arms. My mom squeezed my dad’s hand for the last time in the ambulance,” she added.
The former mayor was one of the three victims who were shot dead by Dr. Chao-Tiao Yumol inside the ADMU campus during the graduation of law students in the university last July 24.
The two other victims were identified as Victor Capistrano, the former mayor’s aide; and Jeneven Bandiala, a university security guard.
Kelsey’s twin sister also sustained gunshot wounds in her kidney and colon, while one bullet also grazed near her left eye.
“My mother was our world,” Kelsey said.
She shared that her mother called them almost everyday just to make sure they are healthy, happy, and safe.
“Just a month ago, she had retired from her political career. She was so emotional and turned to me. She said “I can finally rest. I can finally be a mom.” It hurts so much because she never had a real chance to do that... it wasn’t even one month..” she said.
Kelsey added that the death threats their family received from the suspect’s symphatizers, disinformation, fake news peddlers, and pushy media personnel only made it harder for her family to grieve in peace.
She also shared that her mother’s killing happened a day before the hearing of more than 60 cyberlibel cases her family filed against Yumol.
The younger Furigay included in the post some documents from the Philippine National Police (PNP) and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) that cleared her parents of involvement in illegal drug activities.
Meanwhile, her twin sister, Hannah, was finally able to visit her mother’s wake on Saturday, according to an ABS-CBN News report.
The former mayor’s remains were scheduled to be brought back to Lamitan on Sunday, July 31, the report said.
