Ateneo gunman now under 14-day Covid quarantine at BJMP facility

The medical doctor who shot dead former Lamitan, Basilan Mayor Rosita Furigay and two others at the Ateneo de Manila University on July 24 is now being subjected to Covid-19 quarantine protocols at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP)-run facility.

This was confirmed on Sunday afternoon, July 31 by BJMP National Capital Region (NCR) Director Chief Supt. Luisito Muñoz who said that Dr. Chao-Tiao Yumol is at the Quezon City Jail Quarantine Facility/Ligtas Covid Center in Barangay Payatas under the care of warden Senior Insp. Prince DJ Orbase.

In a GMA News report, Yumol was transferred to the BJMP Quarantine Facility following the release of the commitment order from Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 98.

A police report noted that Yumol was accompanied by Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (CIDU) operatives together with SWAT members on or at about 8:33 a.m. on July 30.

Muñoz said that Yumol will stay at the Quezon City Ligtas Covid Center for at least 14 days while his transfer to another facility has already been worked out.

If tested negative for Covid-19, Muñoz explained that Yumol will most likely be committed to a male dorm facility in Bicutan, Taguig City.

Yumol is currently facing multiple murder charges for the fatal shooting of Furigay, her executive assistant Victor Capistrano and Ateneo security guard Jeneven Bandiala.

A few days after the ateneo shooting incident, Yumol's father Rolando was shot dead by one of the two motorcycle-riding suspects outside his residence in Lamitan City, Basilan.

Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benjamin ‘Benhur’ Abalos Jr. appealed to the public not to speculate about the killing of the elder.

In the wake of the shooting incident in Lamitan City, Abalos ordered the police to tighten security in the city.

“I have ordered the PNP to tighten existing checkpoints in Lamitan City, including its borders to prevent the culprits in the Yumol slaying from escaping,” Abalos said. (Chito A. Chavez)
