PCGG's fate under Marcos admin still uncertain

The fate of the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) under the administration of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. remains uncertain.

Since assuming the presidency, Marcos has yet to disclose his plans for the agency, whose primary function is to recover the ill-gotten wealth accumulated by former President Ferdinand E. Marcos, his immediate family, relatives, subordinates and close associates.

In a press briefing on Friday, July 29, Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles could not respond to queries if the Marcos administration will abolish or dilute the mandate of the PCGG.

"We don’t respond to speculation," she said.

When sought for statement on the proposal of Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin "Boying" Remulla to expand PCGG's functions beyond its primary mandate of recovering the ill-gotten of the Marcos family, the Press Secretary said they will have to wait for Remulla to bring the matter up with the President.

"Since it is Secretary Remulla who has made the proposal, we’ll have to wait for him to bring it up. So right now, there is no policy," Angeles said.

The PCGG was established in 1986 under the administration of the late President Cory Aquino to expedite the recovery of ill-gotten wealth allegedly amassed by the previous Marcos administration.
