Housing for 'Odette' victims in Southern Leyte almost complete

TACLOBAN CITY – The 546th Engineer Construction Battalion of the Philippine Army based here confirmed that the construction of temporary housing facilities for victims of typhoon “Odette” last Dec. 16 in Limasawa, Southern Leyte is almost complete.

According to Sgt. Randy Libradilla, non-commissioned officer in-charge of the project, there are five personnel from the unit and 18 civilian construction workers and volunteers from the Department of Labor and Employment regional office building 38 houses for the recipients.

The project, which started last July 20, is expected to be completed on Aug. 15.

Libradilla added that with some of the houses already complete, they are doubling their efforts to beat the deadline.

DOLE-Region 8 has partnered with SDG Promise Japan, an international non-government organization, and the local government unit of Limasawa for the project.

DOLE-Region 8 has identified the priority beneficiaries composed of indigents, solo parents, and other victims who remain homeless months after the typhoon battered the historic island.

The Labor department deployed 174 TUPAD workers who cleared the project site and loaded and unloaded materials, among others, for the project.

Each worker received P150 daily meal allowance from the SDG Promise Japan aside from their wages from DOLE-Region 8.
