Residents in coastal barangay save six stranded dolphins in Aparri, Cagayan

CAGAYAN -- Residents of Barangay Dodan in the coastal town of Aparri in this province rescued a pod of dolphins trapped in a fishing net owned by fisherman in the area around 10:00 in the morning on Wednesday, July 27.

The incident was reported by Lieutenant Jun-Jun Torio, Deputy Chief of Police, Philippine National Police- Aparri to the DA-BFAR 2 Cagayan Provincial Fisheries Office (PFO).

Immediately the Assistant PFO Fhelie Paraggua and Technical Staff trained on Marine Mammal Stranding and Rescue Operations quickly proceeded to the area.

The rescuers ensured that the six dolphins spotted in the area were safe as they swam away from the shore.

Meanwhile, the PNP said that they received similar reports of sea turtles (Pawikan) stranded along the shore in barangay Paddaya.

According to Dr. Jefferson Soriano, focal person of DA-BFAR 2 Marine Mammal Stranding and Rescue Operations Task Force that the â€˜Marine mammals can strand for a variety of reasons such as entanglement in fishing gear, unusual weather or oceanographic events, earthquakes among others."

On the same day, Captain Tristan John Zambale, acting chief of police, said that they were busy inspecting possible damages brought about by the earthquake when the dolphins were spotted.
