House asks Comelec to hold special polls for vacant Cavite seat


The House of Representatives adopted House Resolution (HR) 100 which calls on the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to conduct a special election to fill the vacancy in Cavite’s 7th legislative district.

During day three of the first regular session on Wednesday, July 27, majority leader and Zamboanga City 2nd district Rep. Manuel Dalipe motioned for the consideration of HR 100. It was subsequently approved by plenary.

The House adopted HR 100, titled “Resolution certifying the existence of a vacancy in the House of Representatives, particularly the representative for the 7th legislative district of the province of Cavite and calling on the Commission on Elections to fill the vacancy through a special election.”

The House seat in Cavite’s 7th legislative district was left vacant after President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. appointed Rep. Jesus Crispin "Boying" Remulla as secretary of the Department of Justice (DOJ).

Remulla was reelected as representative of the district during the May 2022 polls.

On Tuesday, House Speaker Martin Romualdez was designated by plenary as “caretaker” of the vacant House seat. As per the office of Romualdez, the speaker will remain caretaker of the vacant post until a new representative is elected.
