Benguet roads impassable after quake; solon seeks prayers, aid

The aftermath of the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that hit Northern Philippines in the morning of Wednesday, July 27, left several national and local roads impassable in the province, Benguet Rep. Eric Go Yap said on Wednesday, July 27.

In a statement, the lawmaker said it will take at least two weeks to clear these roads.

“At least two weeks is needed to clear these areas which makes accessibility to some communities more difficult. Rest assured that we are closely coordinating with agencies and authorities to secure these areas and deem it safe and passable without further delay,” he said.

Yap asked locals and tourists stuck in areas where there were nearby landslides and eroded roads to report their whereabouts immediately so the local government can send help.

He shared photos of the devastation in his province, with buildings, trees, and poles toppled. He also showed how roads were blocked by huge rocks caused by landslide.

“The quake was strongly felt in many parts of the province, as evidenced in the reports of damage to personal properties and public infrastructure,” Yap said.

The lawmaker reported that at least 19 patients were evacuated from the Northern Benguet District Hospital during the quake, and they are now inspecting the hospital for damages in infrastructure and equipment.

There was also at least one confirmed fatality in Poblacion, La Trinidad and other unverified accounts of casualties in other municipalities, he added.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded the 7.0-magnitude earthquake this morning with its epicenter in Abra, but it also severely affected several areas in the Cordillera, including Benguet.

The impact was also felt throughout Metro Manila and nearby provinces.

The strong tremor badly damaged buildings in Northern Luzon and triggered landslides. People had to evacuate buildings, while the rail services in Manila had to be stopped.

“We seek your prayers for Benguet, Abra, and other areas affected by the quake. Stay vigilant and keep safe,” Yap asked.
