3 die in Cordillera from earthquake

THE body of construction worker Aron Cul-iteng is loaded into an ambulance after his remains were recovered in a building that collapsed in La Trinidad, Benguet.
BAGUIO CITY – Three persons died in the Cordillera Administrative Region from the magnitude-7 earthquake Wednesday, July 27.

Eight persons were injured from the earthquake in the CAR.

A construction worker, Aron Cul-iteng of Cervantes, Ilocos Sur, died when he was buried alive in a building they were constructing in La Trinidad, Benguet.

The La Trinidad Municipal Police Station said the victim was in the basement of the building when the earthquake hit. He quickly ran outside but was hit by falling debris.

The Bureau of Fire and Protection-La Trinidad recovered the victim and taken to the hospital where he was declared dead.

In Bokod, Benguet, laborers Alfredo Coyos, 60, and Pedro Vicente Camilo, 60, both of Barangay Karao, Bokod, were injured when the community irrigation system they were constructing collapsed.

They were rescued ad taken to the hospital.

Jefferson Basar, 24, construction worker, of Tandang Sora, Quezon City died while six colleagues were injured when they were hit by a large rock that fell of the mountain while building a road in Sitio Bulalayao, Pantikian, Balbalan, Kalinga.

In Bangued, Abra, Jonalyn Siganay, 23, of Langiden, Abra and Zone 5, Bangued, perished in the earthquake.

Bangued police said Siganay was hit by a concrete fence that collapsed while fleeing her boarding house. The victim sustained head injuries and died while being treated at Seares Memorial Hospital in Bangued.

The Cordillera Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council is currently conducting damage assessment and looking for other casualties in various provinces of the region.

Mayor Benjamin Magalong here suspended work and classes in government and private establishments after the earthquake.

No casualties and major damage have been reported in this city.

Only minor damage, such as that to the ceiling of the multi-purpose hall at the City Hall and the crown Legacy Hotel, were reported.

Many business establishments closed to give employees the opportunity to go home and check their families.

Kennon Road is closed to traffic while landslides occurred on Marcos Highway and is only open to one-way traffic.
