Coo to continue programs on women in sports

Bowling legend Bong Coo said she would concentrate on strengthening programs for women following her appointment as one of the board members of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

“Advocacy ko na noon pa ang sports for all among women, to have more women athletes and coaches,” Coo said in Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association Online Forum.

Coo added she also wanted to boost programs like Sports for Excellent, Sports for All, and sports for children of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).

“I want to have an avenue where we can invite yung mga anak ng OFWs to get involved in sports. Kasi yung bowling, sport yan ng mga OFWs eh. So ayun ang magiging connection nila,” she said.

Her appointment as one of the commissioners also meant the athletes and national sports association would have a big ally, being that Coo is a former athlete and NSA President herself.

“My position as an athlete and NSA official will help me to see both sides and I’m sure it will help me in the PSC,” Coo said, who has brought home many accolades that include the World Cup, Asian Games and Southeast Asian Games.

“I’ve come full circle because this is the highest I have attained. I’m very happy to be of service to my fellow athletes and Philippine sports as a whole.”

President Marcos has yet to appoint the three other commissioners that would work along with Coo, as well as the PSC chairman.
