Governors' group decries ex-Lamitan mayor Furigay's killing

The League of Provinces of the Philippines (LPP) has joined prominent officials and personalities in strongly condemning the killing of former Lamitan, Basilan Mayor Rosita Furigay inside the Ateneo de Manila University in Quezon City on Sunday, July 24.

LPP president and Union of Local Authorities of the Philippines (ULAP) national chairman Presbitero Velasco Jr. on Monday, July 25 urged the Philippine National Police (PNP) and concerned authorities to conduct an intense probe on the incident to ensure ‘that the perpetrators are brought to justice.’

“On behalf of the 81 member provinces of the League and their respective governors, we collectively express our unequivocal condemnation on this useless and senseless attempt on the life of Mayor Furigay that has cost her life and that of two others,” Velasco said.

“At the same time, the entire membership of the League expresses its wholehearted condolences to the family of the late Mayor Furigay, who selflessly served her constituencies in Lamitan, Basilan in order to deliver to them the development they have always aspired for, through accountable, transparent and participative governance,” he added.

The LPP also has condoled with the families of the two other fatalities namely Furigay’s aide, Victor Capistrano and Jeneven Bandiala.

“Likewise, we also extend our prayers for healing to Hannah Furigay, and all the others who may have suffered both physical and psychological injuries from the incident. It is our sincere prayer that this would not forever mar the memories they have of what should have been a day of celebration for the graduates and their families,” the LPP noted.

The gunman, Chao Tiao Yumol, was arrested after the gun attack.
