Ateneo shooting isolated, will not affect SONA- PNP

The Philippine National Police (PNP) said on Sunday, July 24, that the Ateneo de Manila University that left at least three people dead is an isolated incident that will not affect the security measures for the first State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Bongbong Marcos, Jr.

Policemen were already positioned in various strategic areas in Quezon City, especially near the Batasang Pambansa where Marcos will deliver his speech.

"We assure the public that this will not affect the security measures that we planned and are now being implemented for the SONA of our President Bongbong Marcos," said Police Maj. Gen. Valeriano De Leon, PNP Director for Operations.

Chao Tiao Yumol gunned down former Lamitan City Mayor Rose Furigay and her executive assistant Victor George Capistrano while they were entering a lobby inside the Ateneo de Manila University where the graduation for law students was supposed to be held on Sunday afternoon

Furigay was set to attend the graduation of her daughter, Hannah, who was also wounded during the attack.

Security guard Jeneven Bandiala was also shot dead by Yumol while the former was trying to prevent him from escaping.

De Leon said the incident is now being investigated, especially on how Yumol, who was arrested on board a stolen car, was able to sneak a firearm inside the campus.
