OPS orders probe on PTV deskman over tweet on Ateneo shooting

The Office of the Press Secretary (OPS) has ordered officials of the People's Television Network (PTV) to investigate one of their editors over his tweet about the shooting incident in Quezon City on July 24.

Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles said this after a certain Den Macaranas made a seemingly political tweet about the shooting incident at the Ateneo de Manila University, where three reportedly died.

"Nagbarilan na yata ang mga Pinklawan at Dilawan @ateneo," Macaranas, a former radio reporter, said in his now deleted social media post.

Macaranas was seemingly referring to how the University expressed its support for the presidential bid of former Vice President Leni Robredo over the sitting President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.

In a statement, Angeles, whose office supervises PTV, made it clear that the OPS will not take the incident sitting down if proven true.

"We called the attention of officials at PTV, where he (Macaranas) is allegedly a desk editor, to investigate the matter," she said Sunday evening.

"We assure the public that if true, we will take the appropriate action," she added.

The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) said three people died in the shooting incident. They identified the victims as former Lamitan City Mayor Rosita Furigay, her aide Victor George Capistrano, and a University security guard.

Reports said Furigay was supposed to attend the graduation of her daughter Hanna Rose from law school, an event that was canceled due to the incident.

In a Facebook post, President Marcos expressed sadness over the incident and assured the public of a speedy investigation.

"We are shocked and saddened by the events at the Ateneo graduation today. We mourn with the bereaved, the wounded, and those whose scars from this experience will run deep," he said.

"We commit our law enforcement agencies to thoroughly and swiftly investigate these killings and bring all involved to justice," he added.
