Kidlat Tahimik's historic exhibit in Madrid is coming home to the Philippines

After its successful showcase in Madrid, Spain, Kidlat Tahimik’s “Magellan, Marilyn, Mickey, and Padre Damaso: 500 Years of Conquistador Rock Stars” is on its way to the Philippines.

Earlier this week, the National Museum of the Philippines announced the temporary closure of its Museum of Anthropology in preparation for the homecoming of the said exhibit. It will be open again to the public once the highly-awaited display is set.

“Several installations depicting the cultural struggles and aspirations of the Filipino people over the last 500 years feature larger-than-life sculptures, all showcasing Filipino craftsmanship,” according to the National Museum.

The exhibit by the National Artist was first presented at the Palacio de Cristal in Retiro Park, Madrid from October 2021 to March 2022 and garnered over 500,000 visitors during its run.

To celebrate it, Philippine Embassy in Madrid hosted a diplomatic reception in honor of the Filipino artist last March, with diplomatic corps, business contacts, as well as the director and staff of the Museo Nacional de Antropología attending the event. During the closing of the exhibit, a retrospective of Tahimik’s films was shown at the Reina Sofia Museum.
