Wesley So stays at joint second after six rounds in Croatia tourney

Wesley So scored four points in the last three rounds to stay tied for second with three rounds to go in the rapid part of the Grand Chess Tour’s Super United Rapid and Blitz Zagrev in Croatia Friday.

So downed Croatian Ivan Saric in the fourth round and drew with World Challenger Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia and Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria in the next two to share No. 2 with Jorden Van Foreest of the Netherlands with eight points apiece.

The two trail Iran-born French Alireza Firouzja, who has nine points.

So’s last three round foes—world champion Magnus Carlsen, Firouzja and Azerbaijan’s Shakhriyar Mamedyarov—will make or break his bid for the crown in this Zagreb leg of the tour, which will have the ongoing rapid section and two-part blitz phase in the coming days.

The first day of blitz is set Saturday while the other one on Sunday.

The World Fischer-Random king and two-time United States titlist opened his campaign with four points on Day 1 following draws with fellow American Leinier Dominguez Perez and French Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and a triumph over Van Foreest.
