Solon to Marcos: Open food terminals, depots all over PH

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. should establish food terminals in all regions of the Philippines to support the administration’s agricultural modernization goals, Camarines Sur 2nd district Rep. Luis “LRay” Villafuerte said.

“President BBM could tweak this massive infra program in support of agricultural modernization by putting up food terminals across the country, with a focus on the main agricultural produce in the respective regions,” Villafuerte said on Friday, July 22.

Villafuerte explained that each food terminal or depot could be tailor-made to fit the locale, depending on the area’s context.

“For instance, the proposed food terminal in Bicol could focus on coconut as this is the major crop in our region. But instead of concentrating on just coconut oil, we in the region could focus on processing and packaging for sale here and abroad of such value-added goods as organic coconut milk, sparkling coconut water, skimmed coconut milk, dried coconut milk powder, toasted coconut flakes, desiccated or shredded coconut, coconut chips, and coconut fruit spread and cookies,” he explained.

He even said that by doing so, Marcos Jr. would be taking a page out of his father’s book–the late President Ferdinand Marcos Sr.

“In sync with his agenda as concurrent agriculture secretary to properly map out the supply chain and make foodstuff more accessible to, and more affordable for, consumers, President BBM can take his cue from his late father, Marcos Sr., who had, during his presidency, launched programs to rev up the supply chain such as the establishment of the Food Terminal Inc. (FTI) in Taguig City for the warehousing, processing and marketing of major farm produce,” the lawmaker said.

In 1967, Marcos Sr. issued a presidential decree which saw the creation and establishment of the Greater Manila Terminal Food Market (GMTFM), a government-owned and controlled corporation (GOCC) and National Food Authority (NFA) subsidiary that came to fruition in 1968.

In 1974, it was renamed to FTI.

However, beginning in 1989, several functions and operations of the FTI slowly ceased. Eventually, 74 hectares of land owned by the FTI were sold to Ayala Land. The Department of Agriculture (DA), of which Marcos Jr. is now secretary, plans to revitalize the FTI.
