NLEX caught fire from the three-point territory and bucked the absences of its key players to sink NorthPort, 109-95, in the final day of the eliminations in the 2022 PBA Philippine Cup on Friday, July 22, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Road Warriors flaunted their depth and accurate sniping as seven players finished with at least one three-pointer to power the crucial win and finish with a 6-5 record for the sixth spot in the standings.
Calvin Oftana and Philip Paniamogan set the tone in NLEX’s shooting display, combining for nine of the Road Warriors' 17 total triples. Oftana finished with 18 points on a 5-of-9 clip from beyond the arc while Paniamogan added 15 built on four triples.
Raul Soyud topscored with 19 points and six rebounds while holding the fort in the absence of frontcourt partner JR Quinahan along with Kevin Alas, Matt Nieto and Kris Rosales. NLEX head coach Yeng Guiao opted to rest Quinahan and Alas to keep them fresh for the playoffs while Nieto is still nursing an injury. Rosales, meanwhile, remained in the health and safety protocols.
Don Trollano and Anthony Semerad also showed up with 16 and 15 points respectively.
“‘Yung effort namin, we were making sure na nandun yung intensity, nandun yung aggressiveness namin lalo sa defense. May tendency kasi baka magrelax pa akmi lalo na pag may malaki kaming leads, that’s been a problem nung mga nakaraang laro,” said Guiao who also commended his team for showing the sense of urgency especially that they are trying to avoid falling into last two spots of the standings.
“This game kasi na ito, it will assure us a sixth place finish that will keep us from seven or eight na mahirap maglaro ng malakas na team, No. 1 or 2 team tapos twice-to-beat disadvantage ka pa, so ayun lang talaga yung iniwasan namin,” added the fiery mentor.
Rookie JM Calma saved his best game for the last with 21 points and nine rebounds as he spearheaded the Batang Pier who were also without star players Robert Bolick and Jamie Malonzo.
Kevin Ferrer and Roi Sumang provided support with 16 and 12 points respectively which all went down the drain as NorthPort finished with a 3-8 record in the all-Filipino Cup.
A quick 10-2 start set the tone for the wire-to-wire win as the Road Warrior stepped their feet on the gas pedal to take a 28-16 lead at the end of the opening frame. NLEX never looked back from there as another scintillating second quarter behind Oftana and Trollano allowed the Road Warriors to build a 21-point lead, 57-36, late in the first half.
