Baldwin not keen on Gilas return: I'm not waiting, expecting for that

Tab Baldwin isn’t expecting any call for a Gilas Pilipinas duty amid the criticisms pointed at current head coach Chot Reyes.

Baldwin, who stepped down from his post almost six months ago, spoke up and gave his thoughts as fans continue to rally behind him following Gilas’ dismal showing in the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup and the FIBA World Cup Asian qualifiers.

“I don’t speculate so if that happens, it happens. And that bridge will be something that I look at if and when that happens,” said 64-year-old Baldwin in an interview with YYC Athletes posted Wednesday, July 20, on YouTube. “But I’m not waiting for that, I’m not expecting for that.”

Baldwin is busy building up the Ateneo Blue Eagles for Season 85 and is currently on a scouting tour.

He recently visited Calgary, Alberta in Canada and answered the questions candidly after remaining mum about his situation with Gilas for a couple of months.

The former national head team coach also broke his silence about his departure from Gulas but remained grateful for the opportunities he had with both the management and his players.

“The Gilas scenario, the Gilas situation, it is what it is,” said the Kiwi-American mentor. “And I will never go in depth into those issues that arose. They were hurtful, they were difficult to handle but I pride myself on being professional,” added Baldwin, who also expressed gratitude to Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas chairman emeritus Manny V. Pangilinan.

“That carries on through Ateneo and I’m not gonna look backward, I’m just gonna look forward.”

Still, Baldwin urged fans to continue supporting the team and insisted that the program would really have to go through “tough times” especially leading to the World Cup.

“They are experiencing some tough times but people gotta get behind them. They gotta love this team with the passion. I’m not part of it now but I love it (Gilas) with the passion,” added Baldwin, who also cited his players he handled for the relationship they have built throughout nearly eight years of service in the national basketball team.

“All I can say is I don’t speculate on what might or might not happen but that team and that organization is very precious to me,” he added.
