SWS: 83% of Filipinos hopeful worst of Covid-19 is over

A record-high 83 percent of Filipinos hope that the “worst is behind us” with the Covid-19 crisis, a Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey, released on Wednesday, July 20, showed.
The nationwide survey conducted from April 19 to 27 with 1,440 respondents found that those hopeful the “worst is behind us" with the Covid-19 crisis rose from 80 percent in December 2021, and nearly twice as high as the 44 percent when SWS first asked the question in May 2020.
Meanwhile, those fearing the “worst is yet to come” fell from 19 percent in December 2021 to 16 percent in April 2022.
“The April 2022 percentage of those saying ‘the worst is behind us’ with the Covid-19 crisis is highest in Mindanao (86 percent), followed by Metro Manila (82 percent), Balance Luzon (82 percent), and the Visayas (81 percent),” SWS said.
Compared to December 2021, those saying the worst is behind us rose by three points from 83 percent in Mindanao, and by six points from 75 percent in the Visayas.
It stayed at 82 percent in Metro Manila, while it hardly moved from 81 percent in Balance Luzon.
“On the other hand, the percentage of those fearing ‘the worst is yet to come’ is slightly higher in the Visayas (18 percent), Balance Luzon (18 percent), and Metro Manila (17 percent) than in Mindanao (12 percent),” SWS said.
“Compared to December 2021, those saying ‘the worst is yet to come’ fell by six points from 24 percent in the Visayas, and by five points from 17 percent in Mindanao. It hardly moved from 17 percent in Balance Luzon and 18 percent in Metro Manila,” it added.
Filipinos worrying about catching Covid-19 remains at 88%
The April 2022 survey also found 88 percent “a great deal/somewhat worried” (74 percent a great deal worried, 14 percent somewhat worried) and 12 percent “a little worried/not worried” (4 percent a little worried, 8 percent not worried) that anyone in their immediate family might catch Covid-19.
“This is similar to the 88 percent (72 percent a great deal worried, 16 percent somewhat worried) in December 2021, but three points below the 91 percent (76 percent a great deal worried, 15 percent somewhat worried) in September 2021,” SWS said.
“Compared to past SWS surveys, worry about catching COVID-19 is much greater than worries about catching previous viruses such as Ebola, Swine Flu, Bird Flu, and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS),” it added.
SWS noted that the percentage of those a great deal or somewhat worried about catching Covid-19 is highest in the Visayas (94 percent), followed by Mindanao (93 percent), Balance Luzon (85 percent), and Metro Manila (83 percent).
