SNEAK PEEK: BRP Antonio Luna's explosive guns take center stage in Hawaii drills

The BRP Antonio Luna did not disappoint in showcasing her firepower after her main guns and other batteries were put to test in a series of live fire events during the ongoing sea phase of the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) Exercise 2022 in Hawaii.

The Philippine Navy (PN) said Wednesday, July 20, that the missile-capable frigate tested the accuracy of its main battery, the Oto Melara 76MM Super Rapid Gun, 30MM Smash Aselsan, and caliber 50 machine gun during a gunnery exercise (GUNNEX).

The PN vessel aimed at the hammer-head targets that were deployed by the Halifax-class frigate HCMS Winnipeg, of the Royal Canadian Navy, while under way.

Meanwhile, the 76MM Super Rapid Gun was again tested during the Naval Surface Fire Support (NSFS) Rodeo exercise where it targeted a 2D virtual land information.

The said exercises were held from July 12 to 16, and were part of the RIMPAC that will culminate on August 4.

“RIMPAC 2022 helps to gauge and validate the Philippine Navy’s capacity to sustain operations overseas, and provides resources and an environment that permit international participants to achieve their individual and collective training objectives,” said Commander Benjo Negranza, PN spokesperson.

There were 26 nations that participated in this year’s iteration of RIMPAC, the world’s largest maritime exercise.
