DPWH flood control project protects 300 households in Ormoc City

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed a flood control structure in Ormoc City which is expected to provide protection for around 300 households that have been battling flooding during rainy season over the years.

DPWHSec. Manuel Bonoan said the project cost P28.5 million and a welcome development for residents of Barangays San Isidro, Tambulilid, and Linao whose houses were near the Haubon River.

“This structure will safeguard communities in low-lying areas during heavy rains and typhoons, which trigger the rise of river water, causing flood to inundate communities and destroy residential properties, livestock, and farmlands,” said Bonoan.

DPWH Region 8 Director Allan S. Borromeo said the project was a 350-meter river wall, constructed through stone masonry with sheet piles, and steel slope protection which act as the first line of defense against river overflows.

It is one of the four structures in Ormoc City and part of the 13 flood control structures being implemented in the 4th District of Leyte province--three in Albuera, two each in Kananga and Merida, and one in Isabel and Palompon.

The projects include river dredging, excavation of foundation, installation of gabions, and dike construction covering a total length of 4,911 linear meters.
